Wooden Lacquer Ware

Possibly the most typical of the Maldivian handicrafts, these are almost solely developed in Thulhaadhoo in Baa Atoll. Liye Laajehun as it is known Dhivehi requires the process of moulding and coring out pieces of wood to build attractively crafted boxes, containers and ornamental objects. Made from the local funa, which grows extravagantly throughout Maldives, they come in several shapes and sizes; small toques, jars of various sizes to round and egg-shaped plates with lids. These graceful pieces are decorated in filaments of red, black and yellow rosin and finely carved with flowing flowery patterns.
