National Day

In 1558 the Portuguese laid down a small fort with a Viador (Viyazoru) or superintendent of a trading storage warehouse in the Maldives, which they administrated from their main colony located in Goa. It is stated that they attempted to impose Christianity on the local people of Maldives. However, after the colonization of fifteen years, a local leader named Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al-Azam and his brother revolted against the colonial rule of Portuguese and kicked them out of Maldives in 1573. This victory of Mohamed Thakurufaanu over the Portuguese is now marked as National Day, which is celebrated on the 1st of Rabee-ul-Awwal, the 3rd month according to the Islamic Calendar.
