Language of Maldives

Maldivians speak language of Dhivehi, a language which is identified in the Indo-Indian group of languages. Dhivehi with its origins in Sanskrit and according to some researchers Elu, an ancient form of Sinhala (spoken in Sri Lanka), is strongly shaped by the major languages of the region. The language has been shaped heavily from Arabic since the coming of the Islam in 1153 and the language of English in more recent times, particularly since the introduction of English as a medium of education in the early 1960s.
Given the wide distribution of islands it is not surprising that the vocabulary and pronunciation differ from atoll to atoll, with the deviation being more important in the dialects spoken in the southernmost atolls. For the convenience of the travelers, here some of the important phrases are given which are generally used in day to day life.
