Chapel of St Catherine Travel

Alfonso de Albuquerque conquered Goa on 25th November 1510, St. Catherine’s day, and immediately ordered construction of a chapel upon the site. The chapel was later upgraded to a cathedral by Pope John Paul III Vide a Papal Bull in 1534 and it continued to be so till the new Se Cathedral was constructed.

Situated nearby the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, the site is famous because it is believed that Portuguese entered the city of Old Goa through this point. Jorge Cabral, the then Governor enlarged it in 1550 and installed a stone inscription commemorating the event.

Also located nearby is a hospital also constructed and commissioned by Alfonso de Albuquerque.
