WHEN TO GO

Allahabad experiences all seasons. During summers (March to June) mercury levels reach about 45°C together with hot winds. Monsoon seasons with heavy intermittent rain falls are during July to September. Winters are in the months December, January and February, where minimum temperature goes down to 12°C. Allahabad experiences severe fog in January resulting in massive traffic and travel delays.

Purna (complete) Kumbh Mela or Maha Kumbh Mela, the most auspicious festival of Hindus, used to be held in Ahmedabad once in twelve years. This sacred festival extends for six weeks during January – February months. Last Maha Kumbh was held in 2001 and the next Kumbh Mela falls on January-February 2013. Ardh (Half) Kumbh Mela is held once in six years between two Purna Kumbh Melas. During this Mela, millions of devotees take holy dip at the confluence (Sangam) of three sacred rivers, Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswathy.

Magh Mela takes place every year in the month of Magh (Jan - Feb) of the Hindu calendar. Important religious festival celebrated with much pomp and show is Deepavali during October.

Best season to visit Allahabad is from October to March, which coincides with Deepavali and Magh Mela.

Avoid travel during hot summers and keep a watch on January fog formation.
